Donald CAMERON

Donald Cameron’s CV is very long and detailed, due to his numerous activities, awards, and teaching positions. This is a very brief bio: Donald Cameron was born in Moonee Ponds in 1927. During a long and distinguished career he became a well known painter, engraver, and teacher. Past students may remember him from CIT, or Scotch College. Philatelists will probably know that he designed and engraved the first Australian Christmas stamp issues in 1957 and 1958, as well as a number of other stamp designs.

He studied painting under Sir William Dargie at the national gallery School, and later studied printmaking at the Slade School in London. He won many awards and prizes, including a scholarship from the French Government to study engraving and printmaking. In 1978 he started his own studio and school of art in Melbourne.

The artist’s works are held in many private, regional and overseas collections.
