Carlyle JACKSON

Carlyle Jackson studied with Julian Ashton, Dattilo Rubbo and J S Watkins, and became well known as a skilful painter of landscapes and street scenes, mainly in watercolour.

A somewhat colourful character, he exhibited sucessfully in commercial galleries in the 1920s. However to the chagrin of the established art sales world he also sold many of his paintings himself, showing them in hotel bars and such like. These entrepreneurial activities did not help his professional profile in a rather stiff-collared 1920s Australia, even though his work was highly regarded.

His works have, however, gained some of the recognition they deserve. Top recorded price (at auction) for a Carlyle Jackson work was $4400 (Oil on canvas, signed ‘Carlyle Jackson’ and dated ’37, lower left, Joel’s Melbourne 29/03/1994).

Jackson is represented in many private collections and in public galleries such as the Art Gallery Of South Australia, the Castlemaine Art Gallery, and the Geelong Art Gallery.
