Idris MURPHY

Idris Murphy is an abstract expressionist, typically taking the landscape as his subject. Born 1949, Sydney. Diploma (painting) NAS; postgraduate painting and printmaking Winchester; Grad Dip Education SCAE; Doctorate of Creative Arts UoW. Currently Lecturer, COFA, UNSW. More than 20 solo exhibitions and many group exhibitions including Wynne, Sulman, King Street on Burton, Melbourne Art Fair, Ivan Dougherty. Further travel studies included extensive journies throughout UK, Europe and USA. Murphy’s style is one of abstract expressionism, using the landscape as his subject.
Murphy has exhibited regularly at mainstream galleries since the 1970s, and has exhibited regularly in the Sulmann and Wynn prizes. Currently represented by commericail galleries such as Axia and John Gordon Gallery.

Murphy is currently head of Drawing Studies at the School Of Fine Arts, UNSW.
Awards include the Hunters Hill Art Award, Keith and Elizabeth Murdoch Travel Fellowship, Arts Council Special Travel Grant, Rockhampton Art Prize, Dyason bequest fund for Australian Artists overseas, Moya Doring Memorial Residence, Paris, Artist Lithographer in Residence, AGNSW, French Government Studio, Paris, Tyrone Gutherie Centre, Ireland, Irish Art Council Studio. Works are held in many collections here and overseas including Artbank, Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education, Clot/Bramsden et Georges Studio Paris, Rockhampton Art Gallery, Brisbane Grammar School, Australian National Gallery Canberra, Australian Graduate School of Management, University of Wollongong,
